Molecular and ecological data of terrestrial diatoms

Background

The Hustedt Collection holds the scientific legacy of Friedrich Hustedt (1886-1968), one of the most important scientists in diatomology in the first half of the 20th century. He described and documented almost 2,000 taxa. An atlas of Hustedt's types with modern light microscopic photographs has been published in book form [Simonsen, R. 1987: Atlas and Catalogue of the Diatom Types of Friedrich Hustedt, 1-3. Berlin].
Many taxa, belonging to the ecologically most important microalgae, will be studied by means of molecular genetics. Sequence data of culture strains from Hustedt's type localities will be made accessible beside morphological data for identification and classification.
